BwGN AM Mixtape #5 – The one inspired by the end of the summer

We're nearing the end of the summer here in San Francisco. Children are beginning to go back to school. The final "Summer of Love" anniversary events are coming to a close. This city is nothing like it was in 1967, when three concert festivals became the touchstone for youthful counterculture posturing that continues 50 years later. Today's show will play with our nostalgia for those disaffected times, exploring music written during the late 60s, as well as more modern selections inspired by the events and the music of that era. Thanks for listening.

*The first few minutes of this archived recording have been clipped. All you missed was me saying some variation of what you just read above.

"It was the United States of America in the late cold spring of 1967, and the market was steady and the G.N.P. high and a great many articulate people seemed to have a sense of high social purpose and it might have been a spring of brave hopes and national promise, but it was not... San Francisco was where the social hemorrhaging was showing up. San Francisco was where the missing children were gathering and calling themselves 'hippies.'"– Joan Didion in Slouching to Bethlehem

"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold... everywhere / The ceremony of innocence is drowned" – W.B. Yeats in The Second Coming
