There is excitement in learning that you’re free on a night that a John Schermsal project is playing at Bottom of the Hill. Who is John Schmersal you ask? He’s a musician from Dayton, Ohio and has been responsible for some particularly catchy indie rock music in the last 15 years, including Brainiac, Enon, and Crooks on Tape. This Friday, he brings his particular brand of hook-laden indie rock to Bottom of the Hill to play as Vertical Scratchers with Christian Beaulieu (ex-Triclops!, Anywhere, and Bottles and Skulls). If you came of music appreciating age in the late 90s or early aughts, Schmersal’s brand of exuberant head-nodding indie rock will sound familiar. And since you like indie rock, Vertical Scratchers is sandwiched between Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place (Pinback) and Owl Paws, so it'll be a rockin' time. This Friday's line-up wouldn’t have been out of place in 2003, but it’s 2016, so you’re in luck. Show up by 9:30 pm or you'll miss some good tunes.
