I've been hearing this gem of a track pop up on a ton of BFF.fm shows lately- and for good reason!
When I first heard High-Lo by Broken Water I was instantly transported back to the moment I fell in love with underground music, when I joined my college radio station in 1994. It was a time when Sub Pop and K ruled everything around me. Wrought was recorded by producer Steve Fisk, of Sub Pop and K fame, so it's no surprise that the album harkens back heavily.
But, Broken Water is more than just a throwback band. Their aesthetic blends the very best of what made me crush so hard on the DIY sounds of the Pacific Northwest in the mid 90s- glittery shoegaze guitar, airy vocals, lyrics that put the writer's vulnerability on full unabashed display, plus just a touch of grunge. Take a listen:
Ahhhhhh- yeah, that's the stuff.
