With the recent release of the “Mr. Face” EP (Famous Class Records), Iwas curious as to what Ty Segall had up his sleeve – or jumpsuit – this timearound. In true Ty fashion, we hear many chunks of reverb-drenched guitar, soaked in warm bass lines, humble drums, and charred vocals throughout the EP.But “The Picture” stood out to me as a different track, and not just becauseit’s the last song on this four-track gem.

The delicate yet sharp delivery of Ty Segall’svocals on “The Picture” is a perfect representation of how Segall repeatedlycreates an authentic soundscape. Listening to this feels like I’ve beentransported to 1970’s San Francisco. I’m right there, walking down thesidewalk, in a worn city beaten by time, when all of the sudden an ice coolguitar melody sweeps in to revive the still air. A common theme throughout the"Mr. Face" EP, this track feels more like a waving ‘Hey, I’m stillalive, so might as well celebrate’ song carried to the present day, rather thana deflated and bittersweet goodbye song.

Not to mention Ty Segall’s recent sold outtwo-night residency at Great American Music Hall reminded us he’s still got it!
