Months of careful planning went into this. Did I say months? I was wrong. A few hours, though. I did think about whether to do a Halloween show for a few hours, and then I spent another few hours putting it together. I read way too many articles about songs about serial killers. That is a really good way to mess you up. Some good songs came out of it though. Sufjan Stevens "John Wayne Gacy Jr," Neko Case "Deep Red Bells," The Decemberists "Shankhill Butchers," Lizzo "Lizzie Borden," among others.
I felt I had to include what I would call "classic" music from Siouxsie & The Banshees, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, and Joy Division. Some Tom Waits. Some Nick Cave (as Grinderman). Newer music from Yeah Yeah Yeahs (featuring Kool Keith as Dr. Octagon).
This is the year that I finally play M83 "Car Crash Terror" even though the song actually terrifies me. And finally, because I am basically a twelve-year-old boy, I had to play Werewolf Bah Mitzvah. Happy Halloween. Mazel Tov.
