"intirely rude and barbarous"

Dismissed as “intirely rude and barbarous” but also exoticized, Irish and Scottish folk music found popularity in the 18th century across Europe and Great Britain, when famous composers of the time were hired to "civilize" the music by writing arrangements for people to play at home and in halls. Not surprisingly, motifs based this "vernacular music" entered the composers' own works. Of course, folk music continues to inspire classical music composers to this day. This episode, we'll explore traditional Irish and Scottish music, the arrangements of it made by composers like Haydn and Beethoven, and large-scale classical music works inspired by it.
