PR244 - You Should Be Uncomfortable

James Murphy on getting LCD Soundsystem back together: I spent a good amount of time with David Bowie, and I was talking about coming back, putting the band together. And I was going through the hems and haws of it, and he said, “Does it make you uncomfortable?” And I said, “Yeah,” and he said, “Good. It should. You should be uncomfortable.”

Music this week from LCD Soundsystem (duh), James, Dry Cleaning, Wet Leg, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Protomartyr set showing their evolution as a band. Trip hop set featuring: Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack. Car songs from: Momma, Veronica Falls, Elastica. And the greatest "pass the mic" track of all time, Scenario by A Tribe Called Quest (feat. Busta Rhymes).

  31. Featured Sour Times by Portishead on Dummy (Go! Discs)

Trip hop set from three of my favs: Portishead, Tricky, and Massive Attack.

  32. Featured Karmacoma by Massive Attack on Protection (Virgin)

Tricky used to be part of Massive Attack, until he left to release a solo record. Maxinquaye was a masterpiece, IMHO. So was Mezzanine, Massive Attack's next album, sans Tricky.

  33. Featured Overcome by Tricky on Maxinquaye (Island)

Tricky took lyrics from the song Karmacoma (including his first verse) interpolated it, put a fat beat behind it, and brought in vocalist Martina Topley-Bird. The Massive Attack was a classic "pass the mic" track in the style of hip-hop. Tricky's version is pure sex, call & response, tension & release.
