Episode 4: Roots of House Music

Inspired by the last episode of the Black roots of reggaeton, this episode explores the Black roots of House music in Chicago. This is part of series we'll explore throughout Frisco Freakquencies in understanding where our favorite genres came from. In the mainstream we see DJ's like Calvin Harris and David Guetta as the face of House music, but House music comes from the Black queer scene in Chicago. Born out of the era of Disco, and forced underground, Chicago was once one of the most segregated cities in the US. Black people, let alone queer Black people didn't have access to the dance scene, so they created their own underground. And from there House music was born. In this episode we talk about those pioneers, like Frankie Knuckles, Jessie Saunders, The warehouse, and much more - while listening to the beginnings of House music.
