Tonight’s show explores thee things that RETURN to us: old ideas, unconscious patterns, lessons we thought we’d already learned, internal dreams waiting to be expressed that have never truly left us, and the parts of ourselves patiently and quietly waiting to be reclaimed.
Inspired by The Two of Wands, we’ll explore perspective, possibility, expansion, and the space between what has already been built and what lies beyond the horizon. Together we’ll explore what becomes possible when we shift our perspective beyond the walls built around us and begin paying attention to what resonates authentically, what flows naturally, and where our own evolution can take us when we trust ourselves enough to follow it.
Through music, reflection, and Tarot, we’ll look at how our relationships, communities, creativity, and inner worlds continue to shape one another. We’ll talk about the stories we tell ourselves, the projections we carry, and the ways a shift in perspective, no matter how big or small, can transform the entire landscape of our experience.
Woven throughout tonight’s journey is the iconic work of Dorothy Ashby. Born in Detroit in 1932, Dorothy was often told that the harp didn’t belong in jazz. Refusing to accept the constructs & limitations others attempted to place around her art and creativity, she spent her career expanding what was possible through jazz, soul, world music, spirituality, & a sound entirely her own.
I deeply resonate with Dorothy because she lived within her own truth and authenticity. She refused to play by other people’s rules, expectations, or assumptions about where she belonged specifically the art she created. She did not allow walls imposed by others to define her creativity, her art, her heart, or her voice.
Through her work, Dorothy reimagined not only what an instrument could do, but where it could go, what spaces it could occupy, and how freely it could move between all worlds and realities. She created a musical language that was uniquely her own.
This is how Dorothy’s legacy flows into tonight’s Tarot card, The Two of Wands. The figure stands within the walls of a castle, looking beyond them toward the horizon. One wand remains anchored while the other is within reach. The question is not where we’ve been, but what we choose to carry forward.
Dorothy reminds us that authenticity finds its way home within ourselves when we become aware of the imposed limitations others try to place upon us in an attempt to define who we are, where we belong, or how far we can take our art and how we choose to express and share it with the world.
Trusting our own inner wisdom and remembering, growth is rarely, if ever linear. Paradox is something we can hold, in our favor. As things fall always shed and fall away that no longer serve us, there are always new beginnings ahead.
