Being a BFF.fm DJ is more than playing songs. You build connections. You introduce listeners to new music, forgotten gems, and local artists who deserve to be heard. You're helping shape the culture of San Francisco and beyond simply by broadcasting your most authentic self.

Sure, algorithms can throw together a playlist. But they can’t provide context or share a point of view.

BFF.fm shows are like time capsules, love letters, and mixtapes made with care. They’re personal and expressive, spontaneous yet intentional. Whether it’s a set that feels like therapy, a sonic journey across genres, or a highlight reel of the local music scene, our DJs bring something human to the airwaves.

BFF.fm is built on real people sharing real music and real feelings.

We want you to be yourself on BFF.fm...no “radio voice” required! What matters most is that your radio show reflects your unique curatorial perspective.

Here are a few things you can do to make your application stand out:

  • Be flexible! Choose every time slot you're available rather than only the one you want most.
  • Have a solid show concept (show title, DJ name, etc.) and/or include examples of the types of bands you’d like to play.
  • Share any other material (website, Soundcloud) that helps us get to know you.

Right now we're especially looking for shows with a focus on local music, particularly inviting local bands in to the studio for interviews/sessions.

We're not looking for syndicated shows aka shows that are already broadcast elsewhere or established shows that are being brought over from another station. (we like our programming all original)

And here's a few more things you should know:

  • No prior radio experience is necessary! We'll teach you everything you'll need to know.
  • Having a radio show is a weekly commitment. While we do offer the ability to schedule reruns, consistency is one of the most important attributes to creating a successful radio show.
  • You will be required to track everything you play so that we can maintain our music licenses.
  • As a 100% volunteer-run organization, we rely on everyone to chip in to make our community what it is. Whether it's by creating content for our website, supporting fundraising efforts, tabling at live events, or helping with day-to-day operations of the station, what you give back to BFF.fm benefits everyone around you.
  • Every DJ is also a supporter and makes a monthly donation at a level that is comfortable to them.
