This is a concept record. Not one I fully grasp, because doing so seems to require a fair amount of background reading, as outlined on Stillman’s Bandcamp. That feels a little excessive when it comes to listening to a record. But that’s where the magic of a concept album lies. They are innately excessive by design.

The concept here is Steve Jobs. A journey. A meditation. A way of circling ideas of reality, control, ambition, and illusion without insisting you land on any fixed opinion. The music itself is enough.

It has a smooth, sunlit surface. Golden in the way the Californian sun can feel. Hazy and seductive, but threaded with unease. Rhythms and timbres sit slightly off-axis, never fully resolving into comfort.

That instability pulled me in. Jazz elements flirt with collapse. Some passages feel almost too pleasant, like music designed to reassure, before sudden tonal shifts catch you off guard. The ground keeps moving. I never quite knew where the next few minutes would land.

“If You Knew Him Like I Know Him” was a moment that made me fully engage with this record. Knowing it gestures toward Jony Ive sharpened the experience. The piece feels unruly, full of character and fracture. It’s powered by chaos. I found myself chuckling at how incongruous that feels against Ive’s frictionless design aesthetic.

What stayed with me most was how analogue this record feels. It glances back at a time when the future felt thrilling and new machines felt like doors opening. “No Off” sketches a bodyless, seamless existence, mind in a cloud with no off switch. Against that, the choice to record to tape and mix in real time gently sidesteps Apple’s polished cleanness and brings mess and touch back into focus, letting the music exist in a resistant, beautifully human way. No iterations. No design by committee.

10,000 Rivers feels comfortable living in a slightly unstable space. Curious. Playful. Willing to let meaning remain unresolved. So allow yourself to sit with its layers and concepts and choose the depth of your dive.
