Secret Family is taking the Bay Area by storm with their groovy new jam “Geneva Powerhouse”. The tune is just a taste of what listeners and Bay Area show-goers can anticipate in 2026. We’re stoked to have interviewed the band and gathered some great insight into the makings of this cool project. What brought you to this new single? What can you tell me about it?

“It was a tune we’d initially called ‘Importance’. We’d written different parts to it separately and merged them in person when we’d travel to SF or Montana to see each other. We noodled it out together in the Montana garage, nailing the parts together right before a bar show. Then there was the inspiration with Reese on the drums in the studio, the perfect use of toms. A saint. Really an homage to sights and smells of ‘ocean and Geneva’, and the fear of a rollie cig flicked into the wind that floated up near the gas lines on the roof of the Geneva powerhouse adjacent to our recording space.” ~ Cody

“Yeah, Cody had these chords that we were working with and they were just something that kind of sucked us in. And it was a part that led to this vocal melody. When it came to writing lyrics we were at a studio in San Francisco and were out on the back porch with the notepad and we were just riffing and laughing so hard. It was just based off of, like, pure joy and comedy and just good old-fashioned friendship. The song just kind of encapsulates our vibe.” ~ Greg

What can you tell us about the album, Grouse Head Talisman, ahead?

“Greg found this bird head, this grouse head, in his yard. Is that right, Greg?” - Cody

“Yeah, more or less. It was in the fort. We have a grouse head as a kind of talisman that we've been toting around with us for the last year. A bunch of songs came about just from paying homage to this animal. Our whole idea with the record was to do it on tape and to do it all analog. Then we just got so into chasing the perfect guitar tone. And along with that came trying to find good drum tones and good bass tones and trying to learn how to sing to these songs. We worked really hard to craft rock and roll. And I feel like we finally made something that sounded close to the music that we wanted to listen to, which is really neat." ~ Greg

“Yeah. And then, the grouse head as a talisman kind of became this idea of like, yeah, find ways to make music or whatever you can put your energy into that will keep you from despair from what's going on in the world. It makes me want to cry thinking about it, whatever you can do, whatever your talisman is that saves you from dejection, I think is important. It allowed us not to slump into the dejection.” ~ Cody

What are you most looking forward to this year as a band?

“The six of us all getting to hang out. Releasing Grouse Head Talisman. Fleshing out the other two records we have cooking. Setting up summer shows. Getting to work with Matt Gibbs and Food For Love Records. He has been a godsend and a real inspiration for our ethical pursuit of the quest. And shout out to the rest of the band, Lionel and Levi and Reese and Sheena for being down for the quest for two weird, hasty dads. Dad rock.” ~ Cody

“I'm really excited for the future. Everyone contributed to what Grouse Head Talisman became and I feel like the next evolution is going to be really neat between our past in songwriting, not using old songs, but just like Cody and I’s connection that we have and then integrating these like fresh souls who just like to bring so much life and rock and roll.” ~ Greg

How would you describe your experience playing music in the bay area scene? Has that changed over time for you?

“It’s definitely a community that boosts everyone up. Getting to meet some of our heroes in that network. The endless musical inspiration left in the fog from as far back as that like Byrds-adjacent sound and the early psych scene to the more recent greatness of The Thinking Fellers Union, White Fence, DRINKS, Thee Oh Sees, Deerhoof, Ty Segall, The Mantles and all that. The crowds that are actually down to move and shake. Bartenders and sound people that smile.” ~ Cody
