Nikki Diamonds of “Frisco Freakquencies” spoke with our BFF.fm team about her roots in the Mission, her passion for DJ’ing, and how her show has recently become a deep dive into the roots of a variety of music genres, like reggaeton and techno.

For people walking into your show blindly, how would you describe your show?

Honestly, it's a mixed bag. I pitched it as a variety show, and then my first episode came right after Bad Bunny did the Super Bowl. So the first few episodes kind of turned into a series about the roots of that music. If we look at reggaeton, and a lot of the music now, it's very light-skinned white, versus reggaeton roots are from Panama- they're black roots. So my show has since been the roots of house music and reggaeton music. Sometimes I'm feeling down- and like I have an episode called Would you still love me if I was a worm.

“This episode is just sad boy, baddies with the saddies, would you still love me if I was a worm feelsssss. Just one of them days, and whenever I'm having one of them days - I also listen to sad, existential, would we/won't we, love me? or not music. Enjoy.. or don't.”

You're a new DJ at BFF.fm! How'd you hear about us?

Many, many DJ friends are here, it follows down the trail. Yes, shouting out Mood Swings, Monday Line Up, and Intergalactic Doll. Many friends are here.

What's your kind of history with the Bay Area? Have you lived here for a while? Did you just move here?

Born and raised here in the Mission.

For Mission or San Francisco/ Bay Area in general, do you have a favorite venue, favorite coffee shop, or a favorite spot to be at where you kind of really feel that creative energy?

Yes, favorite coffee shop for sure, Temos on 24th. [My] favorite bar was like my dream place to DJ when I first started DJing, El Rio- because I went there, my parents went there. I got to DJ there like the first month I started DJing.

Are you excited for anything in the future with your show or are you just kind of still getting settled down?

I really went into it because I DJ a lot out in the world, but I'm also a student of music, and I think this gives me a reason to do more research and be more intentional about that. So not sure what that's going to turn into, but yeah.

Do you have maybe an artist, an album, or a song that either you've personally really been into or that you've been playing on your show that you could recommend out there to the universe?

I've personally been listening to Kehlani's album that just dropped. But also FKA Twigs' Eusexua is, like, beyond amazing. I went to Coachella and I saw her there, I was balling tears at the end.
