Welcome to Bandcamp Friday! Until midnight tonight, 100% of any money spent on Bandcamp will go directly to the artist, making today the perfect day to support your favorite Bay Area bands.

Why buy music in the streaming era? Because Spotify is estimated to pay $0.003 - $0.005 cents per stream, depending on the artist. Even if you buy an album for $1, you’re paying the artist the equivalent of 333.3 song plays. That impact matters, especially for independent artists.

To celebrate, the BFF.fm community is sharing their hidden gems, ride-or-die faves, and local legends that you can support today. Discover something new, revisit an old favorite, and support the Bay Area music scene!

James Wavey - Sleepers Break (garage psych rock, Oakland)

I don't think it's a hot take to say that Michael Bridgmon, the creative force behind the project James Wavey, is one of the most distinctive artists in the Bay Area music scene. His work has always been genre-bending, emotionally raw, and politically defiant. But now that we're getting a few glimpses of his new album Sleepers Break, I'm going to get out ahead of the crowd to confidently declare it's his best work yet. ~ Cosmic Amanda, Hot Local Singles +

For Horses - “Keys/Spider” (femme alt rock, San Francisco)

There’s a haunting beauty to For Horses’ first official release, with “Keys” and “Spider” introducing the band through a raw strain of alternative rock that feels equal parts intimate and restless. Far from their first rodeo, For Horses first came together as GrrlBand in Eugene before bringing their sound to the Bay Area. Now, the five-person queer band carries that history forward under a new moniker, their lyrics drawing from the legacy of women and other queer artists in the alternative rock scene. Recorded at 2200 Studios in Sausalito on a Tascam 388 tape machine, the mix gives the songs an intense quality that speaks to your heart. ~ Addie, BFF.fm volunteer

starbelliedbug - “Crayola Car” (slowcore/shoegaze, San Francisco)

Perfect song for when the allure and sheen of summer starts to wear off and the imagery of an over it red Teletubby smoking a cigarette and driving around in a pink Volkswagen seems to capture the mood. The sing speakey vocals pay homage to Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon on “Dirty Boots” or the Drop Nineteens on “Kick the Tragedy” ~ Swirving, audiosyncrasies

My Pet Fossil - “Live My Valley Life” (alt rock, indie-rock, Sacramento)

It can't always be SF or Oakland, someone has to hold it down in the California State Capitol. Michael P. Fossil and his band paint the bleak picture of life in the Sacramento Valley. ~ Swirving, audiosyncrasies

Unity - “3 Weeks” (indie rock/pop, San Francisco)

It’s been about 3 Weeks since this single from these local legends dropped. The album release show on 9/16 and corresponding art show on 9/19 celebrating the local community are not to be missed! ~ Swirving, audiosyncrasies

Galore - “Dirt” (jangle pop, San Francisco)

So, let’s just say it—creative, jangly pop remains alive and well in the Bay Area. While not alone in supporting this statement, Galore is definitely part of the proof. Yes, sustaining a productive, interesting band in 2026 San Francisco can indeed be done! And well. 2025’s Dirt on the Speakeasy Studios label, the band’s second full-length, is a lovely collection of consistently catchy tunes, chock full of chiming guitars, harmonious vocals, and melodies that stick. - Ryan, BFF.fm volunteer

Foliage - U Love Me (surf indie, dream pop, San Francisco)

Dreamy, surf-tinged indie bliss from local legend Foliage! The perfect excuse to sink into their gorgeous discography and snag a cuuuuuute lil tee. - DJ B-rated, The Sunday Screeches

Omnigone - Turn Up the Fear (ska punk, Bay Area)

OF COURSE the Bay Area has a thriving ska scene in 2026. Our favorite brassy heavyweights deliver a feverish assault of protest anthems swarming with maximalist fury and weirdo fun. - DJ B-rated, The Sunday Screeches

CuVa Bimö - New Western Values (post-whatever rock, Oakland)

Recklessly cool and casually weird rock that delivers cutting commentary on the state of the world (and more specifically, SF itself). Stay mad, stay weird, and rock on despite it all. DJ B-rated, The Sunday Screeches
