Yesterday, the Oakland-based psych/garage rockers, Secret Family, released a memorable new music video for their single "Grouse Head Talisman".
The music video was thoughtfully crafted in collaboration with music video artist, Arturo Baston from Bass-Tone. Baston's visual artistry cleverly captures the underlying folk-tale-esque spirit of the single and the highly anticipated album ahead.
Please enjoy the new music video "Grouse Head Talisman" by Secret Family below!
Through visual texture, deep color saturation, and a similar tactile sensibility of an old storybook, the video and all-analog song invite listeners into a fabulistic daydream.
Reviving the tradition of immersive sonic storytelling, the song "Grouse Head Talisman" opens with transient atmospheric sounds reminiscent of a child's lullaby, as if stepping beyond the gates of a new cosmic plane. Upon arrival, we are witnesses to a lone wanderer named Peanut, and his journey as he stumbles upon a token of hope in an unexpected place.
The concept of the full album "Grouse Head Talisman" derives from multi-intrumentalists, Cody Bohan and Greg Reed's discovery of a literal Grouse Head in Reed's backyard, which soon became a symbol of much more. In my interview with these two lifelong friends, Bohan stated,
"the grouse head as a talisman kind of became this idea of finding ways to make music or whatever you can...that will keep you from despair from what's going on in the world. It makes me want to cry thinking about it. Whatever you can do, whatever your talisman is that saves you from dejection I think is important."
In an increasingly isolated, violent, and automated world, Secret Family has tuned into the undercurrent of feeling that most of us are experiencing. As storytellers, they have invited us to remember the power of our talismans, to hold them close, and to join them in singing "every serpent doesn't have its day".
The new album Grouse Head Talisman will be released later this week! We've been stoked for this release all year. This will be Secret Family's first full-length album, available on Sept 17th.
Join us in celebrating with the band this Thursday at 8pm! Bring all your BFFs and $15 down to El Rio in San Francisco (located at 3158 Mission Stin San Francisco) for their release show! They'll be sharing the stage with SF's very own Mint and Oakland-based Kilroy Rogers. We'll see you there!
Secret Family's new album Grouse Head Talisman will be out on Food of Love Records. Pre-order the album on Bandcamp, follow them on Instagram, or check out their band website for more information.
