Recently, BFF connected with San Francisco-based artist, Julian Armando Gervasi, to talk about the exciting new sonic direction for Loco Tranquilo on their upcoming EP. The new single, titled "SUEÑO", will be released September 25th! In our conversation, he shared his creative process for the song and his exploration of self-love, identity, and courage through this new project.
"Sonically, I wanted less polish and more raw immediacy inspired by bands like Interpol, early Strokes, and a bit of Joy Division in the rhythm section. It feels truer to where I am currently emotionally, especially since the song is in Spanish, my native language."
Gervasi's experience as an Argentine-born, San Francisco resident has radically shaped his exploration of place, belonging, and personal self-expression. His access to multiple cultural and linguistic expressions gives him a wealth of tools for emotional excavation in his creative work.
"My writing usually starts in Spanish on a classical guitar to access the core feeling. For this track, the Spanish lyrics came first and they carried the weight naturally. Being bilingual lets me move between emotional and ideological worlds."
This project is a new sonic direction for Loco Tranquilo, referencing a distinct form of self-expression from past work he has shared.
"Compared to my last release, which leaned more atmospheric indie pop, this one is sharper and built around a full band rather than just me and a producer. The energy and message feel more driving with clearer statements, faster pace, and a more aggressive and melancholic sound."
The song "SUEÑO" is lyrically honest and demonstrates Gervasi's capacity for deep complexity in genre-blending and self-expression across realms. His project explores themes of selfhood and care, with the translated lyrics:
I let myself be carried by inspiration
The hope of finding a brand new vision
Without love, there is no salvation
I dream of this upon waking
I dream a heart
I dream when I am awake
In Gervasi's own words,
"SUEÑO is about the constant fight to believe in yourself. There’s no real salvation without self-love. A dream is a message; being awake is the practice of that dream. The song is for anyone struggling to accept themselves, or who has loved someone so intensely they forgot who they were."
