Turner Capehart, whose song "High Five After the Basketball Game" often serves as the outro music for I Luv Mondays, has a new album out called Early Music (bandcamp): 14 tracks of Renaissance polyphony played on synth and written between the 12th and 17th Centuries. Take it away Turner:
"I started working on Early Music in December 2019. Shortly afterward I was laid off, but I took it as a chance to work on musical projects and poetry and decided to put off the job search for a few months. Little did I know then how much time I would end up having! I've always found the work of Thomas Tallis, Josquin Des Prez, and William Byrd to be calming and fortifying and I wanted to make something that captured that with a unique atmosphere. I did some research to find other artists that matched that mood and were from a similar time period. Even without the synthesized/software-driven instrumentation, I think a lot of this work actually feels somewhat modern or at least has a timeless quality to it. Some contemporary composers like Avro Pärt and others have definitely taken inspiration from this era of early European Polyphony which coincided with the transition out of the Middle Ages. Some of the arrangements are altered slightly but for the most part, I stuck to their original score. Early Music is also partially inspired by an album Mt. Eerie made in 2013 called "Pre-Human Ideas" that used mostly software instruments and a very "in-the-box" computer-driven production. I enjoy the novel quality of this approach and even though it can be sterile I like the very digital space that it creates. I also hope that this release encourages people to look at this era of early Renaissance/Reformation music, a lot of which I think is under-appreciated when compared to the more elaborate work that came after it."
